I've never really liked old romance movies because they always seemed stupid. Maybe it's just because I'm a guy, I don't know. Remember Sleepless in Seattle? However, when my parents rented this movie, I remembered a scene from The Net where Bullock said that it was her favorite movie. I decided to watch it and found it to be quite entertaining, as well as romantic and funny.
I've always heard of Audrey Hepburn, but I always got confused between Audrey and Katherine Hepburn. I could never remember who was who. After watching this movie, I have become a fan of Audrey's work. I've never really like Katherine's work, but I don't remember many movies with her in it. However, Audrey Hepburn is wonderful in this movie. I enjoyed watching her performance and her character. Both interested me, but I was caught up in the character the first time I saw it. The second time, I watched for her performance.
What works so well is that the plot is so innocent. Hepburn plays Holly Golightly, a high-priced escort who dreams of marrying an older, rich man. She isn't wealthy but she likes to pretend to be. She has parties with rich people and goes window shopping at "Tiffany's." When a well-off (financially) man (George Peppard) moves into her apartment complex, she likes him, but after seeing him with other women, she decides to do see other men.
Lots of things happen, and then comes the scene described in The Net. The scene is very emotional and cheerful at the same time. The plot isn't very simple, but the chemistry between the two characters is and Hepburn and Peppard show it well. There is also a lot of humorous scenes in the movie. One hilarious scene is when Hepburn gets drunk. She does a great job and deserves the Oscar nomination that she got. And yes, that is Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is rated PG. I'm not sure if the movie was rated, but if it had been rated, it would have been PG. Being made in 1961, the film has hardly anything offensive. But little kids probably won't enjoy the mushy romance, but kids 12 and up will probably enjoy the humor. Adults will swoon over the romantic interludes between Hepburn and Peppard. As for me, I enjoyed everything about this movie.
